Who we are
The Water Conservation Trust of Canada (Water Trust) is a non-profit and non-governmental organization working to maintain and restore instream water to the river systems of Alberta and Canada.
Our mission is to improve social, economic and environmental outcomes by acquiring water entitlements for instream flow, and otherwise working to maintain, restore and protect instream flow.
Water Trust enables water license holders to transfer water to a conservation license. This conservation water is held instream to benefit and support healthy aquatic ecosystems. We work closely with the Government, in full compliance with the Water Act.
Many of our aquatic systems are stressed and in need of water to maintain healthy instream flow. We use a variety of tools, including economic instruments, in its work to maintain, restore and protect the water of our rivers.
Collaboration
We believe in a collaborative approach, since each transfer of water requires collaboration with many parties. We need to know from watershed groups what rivers or reaches are degraded. We need to know from licensees about water surplus to their needs. We need to know from environmental groups where the aquatic system needs a boost.
We need the support of government in the interpretation and application of Water Acts. We need the support of individuals in the community to encourage conservation, and contribute to the Water Trust, both in the form of water and financial contributions. Above all, we wish to work with each of these interest groups to ensure that we recognize the balance of water for nature, people and industry, ensuring a sustainable future for all.
